Kanteiryu (Kantei-style) is a uniquely hand-painted typeface, classically used for the official signs of kabuki plays.

Kanteiryu (meaning Kantei-style) was named after Kantei which was the trade name for the calligrapher Kanroku Okazaki who painted the title of kabuki in his unique style which later became very popular.

This typeface has three intentions; the round shape illustrates the play running harmonically (the Japanese word for round – “wa” also translates to harmony), the inward strokes welcome crowds into the theatre, and the fullness of letters and its consistent texture shows the seats filling up with audiences.

Throughout the seemingly-framed borders, this typeface allows the  Kantei-style calligrapher to express the unique atmosphere or the tensity of that particular kabuki play.

Today, Kantei-style is selected for many occasions other than kabuki. This includes reference for printed fonts that are adopted from hand-painted letters.
